DHL and the South China Morning Post yesterday launched the 21st season of their annual business awards with a special emphasis on companies that produce strong financial results while displaying a commitment to society and their employees.

In calling for nominations for outstanding businesses and entrepreneurs in nine categories, Tony Turner, secretary of the judging panel, emphasised that companies are expected to demonstrate their social consciousness as well as a clear commitment to the welfare of their employees.

Professor Richard Wong Yue-chim, chairman of the judges' panel and deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, said: 'With the financial tsunami, there are many fundamental uncertainties. We're looking for business leaders with long vision who can eye market conditions and prepare to steer their company through adversity.'

Established by DHL and the South China Morning Post in 1990, the Hong Kong Business Awards acknowledge the contributions made by individuals and companies in maintaining and expanding the economic viability and international stature of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta. The nine award categories are: Business Person, Business Executive, Owner-Operator, Young Entrepreneur, International, Enterprise, China Company, SME and Lifetime Achievement.

'Since the awards started, Hong Kong had gone through many cycles,' said Turner, managing director of Professional Public Relations. 'We'd like to recognise business achievements and [the entrepreneurs'] efforts in a difficult time.'
