Evergreen places first order with Koreans

Keith Wallis

Taiwan's Evergreen Group is spending more than US$1 billion (HK$7.8 billion) on its first shipbuilding order in South Korea with a deal for 10 ultra-large container ships from Samsung Heavy Industries. The first of the 8,000 teu ships will be delivered in 2012. Six vessels will be for Evergreen Marine Corp and four for Evergreen International in Panama. 'The 10 ships are the beginning of a programme of a new generation of container vessels that will be ordered by Evergreen Line from several shipbuilding yards in Asia,' Evergreen said. The initial programme calls for 32 ships.
