Hongkong Electric workers upset over pay policy change
Hongkong Electric workers are up in arms over a change in company policy to adjust their pay according to individual performance instead of referring to the inflation rate as in the past. They said they had not been consulted about the change and demanded the old practice be kept. The workers said the company made a profit of almost HK$6.7 billion last year and it should have no problem offering them fairer pay. They are also unhappy about another policy change where those working at the Lamma plant are only allowed to go home when the No 8 typhoon signal is issued, instead of the No 3 signal.
Protest over expansion of landfill
About 100 residents from more than 10 housing estates in Tseung Kwan O took to the streets yesterday in protest at a government plan to expand a landfill close to their homes. The expansion, they claimed, would see some of them living as close as 800 metres to the dump. The protesters fear there could be hygiene problems.
