War between the generations
One of Baat Gwaa's best friends rang up this week and sounded really distressed. 'I am going to be unemployed soon because I will be one of the first casualties in the coming war between the generations,' she sobbed.
Mary said never mind the credit crunch, this is the age of war between the older generations and Generation Y, which refers to those born between 1980 and the mid-1990s.
Her bank has hired some Generation Y summer interns to act as ambassadors to tap into the market of younger generations, and offer services to capture these potential customers. Mary is afraid they will gradually replace more experienced staff like herself.
It's true that Generation Y customers are very different, so older staff may not be able to relate to their needs and aspirations.
But the bank still needs the expertise of its older employees to handle the bulk of customers.
While Mary seemed a little relieved on hearing this, she is now worried about becoming a member of Generation U - or Generation Unretired - by having to continue working because of her experience. Oh, dear me!
