HK most tax-friendly economy

Hong Kong has the most tax-friendly economy in the world, according to a survey by Grant Thornton International, a global accounting and consulting firm. Some 53 per cent of private businesses in the city said they were not burdened by onerous taxes, compared with 38 per cent in second-placed Singapore, 3 per cent on the mainland and 4 per cent globally. The absence of many taxes found in other economies was cited as a key reason.

Wi-fi hotspots act as travel guides

More than 7,000 Wi-fi hotspots run by PCCW will now double as travel guides, providing free access to Hong Kong Tourism Board event information and downloadable smartphone apps. For HK$20 for 24 hours of general Wi-fi use, the hotspots will also show a map detailing restaurants, shops and attractions in the user's particular area.

Director jailed for groping

Movie director Liu Kim-ching was jailed for 14 days yesterday for indecently assaulting a woman on a MTR train. Liu, 41, pleaded guilty in Kowloon City Court. His short films Pastry and Little Did She Know were screened at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival 2009.

Man faces murder charge

A 57-year-old man arrested on suspicion of hacking his 52-year-old wife to death on Sunday will appear in Kwun Tong Court today after being charged with one count of murder yesterday.

Warning on unsafe sardines

The Centre for Food Safety warned the public not to eat Nostromo Sardine all'olio di oliva (120g) with the use-by date December 31, 2014, and consignment/lot number AN 155Ja because the sardines had a high bacterial count in tests by the European Commission and were being recalled by their Moroccan manufacturer.
