La Creperie

1/F, 100 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai. Tel: 2529 9280 Open: Tuesday-Sunday 11.30am-11pm (Friday and Saturday until 11.30pm)

Cuisine: Breton Price: about HK$170 for a two-course meal without drinks or service charge.

Ambience: the tiny restaurant has a nautical feel. Servers wear Breton-style striped sailors' shirts, the walls are hung with rope and nets, and salt and pepper shakers are lighthouse-shaped. Tables are close together so you'll probably hear your neighbours' conversations.

Pros: the galettes (savoury cr?pes, made of nutty, mildly sweet buckwheat) and dessert cr?pes. The restaurant offers several varieties of cider, which makes a refreshing and mildly alcoholic accompaniment to the food.

Cons: the canned whipped cream used on some of the dessert crepes.

Recommended dishes: eckmuhl - reblochon cheese with potatoes, bacon and onions (HK$125, above) - had a pungent and hearty filling, while the delicate galette was deliciously crisp at the edges. Lighter eaters might want to share this one - I couldn't finish it. My guests had no problem finishing theirs. One ordered la marin (HK$118), which had sweet, perfectly cooked scallops with bacon and mushrooms in a creamy sauce. Another guest was hesitant about the egg in his order of la bigoudene (HK$78) because he disliked runny yolks, but the waitress said the egg could be scrambled. The cr?pe was the classic combination of ham, Emmental cheese and egg, with vegetables - a choice of tomatoes, mushrooms or onions. He chose the saut?ed mushrooms, and his only complaint was the accompanying salad, which had an overly mustardy dressing. My dessert cr?pe, la sextant (HK$69), had caramelised apples and salted butter caramel, and was so delicious I tried to eat the whole thing before my guests noticed and asked for a bite (I failed). Their shared selection - la route du rhum (HK$78), had pineapple, raisins and coffee ice cream (they opted for vanilla), and was flambeed at the table with hot rum. It was satisfying, but would have been better with fresh pineapple, rather than canned.

What else? the original La Creperie is in Shanghai.
