It seems even the so-called pseudo-models are more highly rated among the internet community than this year's Miss Hong Kong winners - some Net users have even nicknamed newly crowned beauty queen Toby Chan Ting-yan 'Miss Pork Chop'. But at least other, former beauty queens weren't as mean.

'I think they've had negative comments made about them because their faces are still new to the audience,' said veteran actress Angie Chiu Ngar-chi, who came fourth in the 1973 pageant. 'It takes time to build your image and for the audience to accept you.' Chiu and a handful of other former beauty queens, including Monica Chan Fat-yung and Hoyan Mok, gathered in Central's Simplylife restaurant on Tuesday to congratulate Chiu on becoming president of the Wai Yin Association, the Miss Hong Kongs' charity club.

Chiu admitted she hadn't been paying much attention to this year's pageant, but said she trusted the judges' decision. 'I think the girls are getting prettier each year, thanks to the make-up and styling tips they've been given.'

Chiu will be in charge of the charity's fund-raising for educational projects.' Yes, I can't wait to meet the girls,' she said. Well, we're almost convinced.
