At least one worker died and more than 10 were injured after one pier of an unfinished railway bridge connecting the cities of Maoming and Zhanjiang in Guangdong collapsed yesterday. A picture posted on the Online Maoming website showed a concrete mould of a bridge pier had collapsed; several workers could be seen digging amid the wreckage. The China News Service said at least one worker was confirmed dead at the scene, while witnesses said three other workers were sent to nearby hospitals after being dug out. Neither the reasons for the accident nor an accurate casualty figure were known because local officials had failed to report it by yesterday afternoon, the news service reported.
