A Hong Kong multimillionaire hanged himself on Sunday after killing his wife with a knife in Huizhou , Guangdong.

Their bodies were found at their home in Huidong county at about 6pm, police said.

Lin Li, 52, hanged himself from a window in the second-floor living room of their apartment after killing his 30-year-old wife, Ye Huiping. Her bloodied body was found in a bedroom.

The couple had locked their room at noon while their children, aged nine to 13, played downstairs.

The children called on their parents to open the door several times but no one answered.

When they got hungry late in the afternoon, they asked a worker at Lin's factory for help. The worker used a ladder to climb into the bedroom through a bathroom and found the bodies.

Police said the case had been classified as murder-suicide.

The Southern Metropolis News said Lin owned a shoe factory and several properties on the mainland and was worth tens of millions of yuan.

He divorced his Hong Kong wife 12 years ago and married Ye, a Huizhou native. She had since qualified for Hong Kong residency.

Workers and friends said Lin and Ye had been at loggerheads for years.

'He always worried his wife would have affairs with other men,' one of Lin's employees said. 'We heard that the wife had filed for a divorce and demanded a share of their assets.'

Police said Ye had complained to the Women's Union twice since September last year that Lin beat her often.

The union then sent a team that dealt with family violence to investigate the reports.

When contacted, Lin said he beat his wife because she often stayed out late.

But Ye said she had been going to business meetings.

Ye had also regularly sought the union's advice on how to file for a divorce.
