An unnamed woman with the Public Security Bureau in Aksu, Xinjiang, yesterday denied that there was any blast in the area under its jurisdiction.

When asked on the phone about the explosion by a Cable TV reporter, she said: 'We in public security have never made such an announcement. This is a fabrication. No such thing has ever happened here. It is nothing more than a rumour which has been spread by somebody.'

Even the fact that the Xinhua news agency had reported the news could not sway her.

'It is not true even though it is reported by Xinhua. It will not be true unless the public security bureaus or our official website makes it public.'
