Trunk shows are a great way to shop because prices are cheaper than retail and supply is limited, so it's quite possible to find something unique. They also have an air of exclusivity that department stores can't offer.

A handful of upcoming shows are worth marking down in your diaries. First up is Catherine Deane's spring-summer 2011 show, held today at Kee Club (12pm to 9pm 6/F, 32 Wellington Street, Central; www.keeclub.com). Deane is known for her romantic couture evening gowns (right) but has recently gone ultramodern. At the show you'll find merchandise from past seasons as well as autumn offerings. Joining Deane will be local milliner Jay Cow, whose hat designs border on art.

With Indian new year coming up in November, several Indian couture designers are visiting the city, offering custom order services to customers. One of them, Suneet Varma, is among India's most respected designers and has shown at Milan Fashion Week alongside greats such as Giorgio Armani. His latest collection is inspired by One Thousand and One Nights and features heavily embroidered Indian and Western wear. Also look for a couture collection inspired by late fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez alongside a capsule collection of bags made in collaboration with Judith Leiber. Check it out from 11am to 7pm on September 8 at the Conrad Hotel (Caine Room, Pacific Place, Admiralty).

Also worth checking out is younger design duo Manzar & Hirsch, who are offering custom-made traditional Indian wear and evening wear today at the Conrad Hotel (inquiries: 61081164).
