Despite her role in compensated dating movie Girl$, mainland actress Bonnie Xian Se-li said it remains a world she can't comprehend.

The latest work by Rice Rhapsody director Kenneth Bi Guo-zhi centre on four girls who engage in compensated dating for different reasons. Xian (right) plays a student from an affluent family who gets involved in the business out of boredom.

To prepare for her role, the 27-year-old checked out some paid dating websites to get more ideas about the phenomenon which first surfaced in Japan.

'They are not much different from average online dating sites. The only difference is that [the girls] charge you money when you ask them out,' says Xian. 'It's hard to imagine being in that world. It's purely materialistic. But the script helped me a lot.

'When my company told me about this movie and the challenges of playing the character, I hesitated. The character is so different from my previous roles and there are some intimate love scenes. But I had confidence in the director and took up the offer.'
