Singapore speed ball breaks track record

Singapore's pin-up sprinter Rocket Man made a successful comeback by claiming the Woodlands Handicap (1,200m) and smashing the course record at Kranji yesterday. Rocket Man sizzled in 69.74 seconds, shaving 0.89 of a second off Tuxedo Moon's previous record. Resuming after being humbled by Green Birdie in the Group One KrisFlyer International Sprint on May 16, all reports were that Rocket Man had been working a treat since trainer Patrick Shaw had brought him back to work in his lead-up towards a tilt at the Grade One Sprinters' Stakes in Japan on October 3. Ridden by Felix Coetzee, Rocket Man covered the first 1,000m at such breakneck speed that the official course record of 58.07 seconds was also broken as they clocked a sizzling 57.8 seconds. 'I'm absolutely speechless. There's nothing more I can say about this horse, his runs speak for themselves,' Shaw said. 'To score first-up with 59kg and break the record is just an outstanding feat.'
