Star sprinter on target for more glory

Trainer Caspar Fownes is licking his lips ahead of next Sunday's Centaur Stakes in Japan and has described the race as an HK$11 million barrier trial leading into Green Birdie's main target of winning the Sprinters' Stakes (1,200m) at Nakayama Racecourse, Japan, on October 3. Fownes reported that his star seven-year-old sprinter has travelled well and is eating up ahead of his tilt at the rich Japanese Sprints. The trainer will fly to Japan today to check on Green Birdie before he is floated by road to Osaka on Wednesday. 'He's done well and has come on nicely from his barrier trial last week,' Fownes said. 'He was tucked up after his win in Singapore, but he let down really nicely during the break and has now bounced straight back to his best. 'I'm looking at the Centaur stakes as an awesome barrier trial, where if he wins we can win the owners a load of prize money, but his main aim is certainly the Sprinters' Stakes next month.'
