Silent Witness' half-brother Best Choice proves he is 'special'
Former world champion sprinter Silent Witness is never likely to have a relative of equal calibre, but his latest half-brother made a winning debut in Sydney on Wednesday that suggested he will definitely keep the family name aloft.
Best Choice, a half brother by Redoute's Choice, did a nice job winning in good class at Canterbury racecourse over 1,250m at his first appearance and showed the potential to be a Group performer and potentially a stallion proposition.
Purchased for A$275,000 at the Sydney Easter sales and raced by Hong Kong racecaller Apollo Ng, Best Choice's ability was well advertised with some nice trials that saw him start a solid second favourite before winning at a distance expected to be on the short side for him.
'I think he is a pretty special horse,' said his veteran trainer Clarrie Conners, who has had more than enough top-grade gallopers to know a good one. 'He went shin sore and he got a bit of a virus last preparation and, if you look at him, he is still 12 months away. He is a big horse, a lot of raw material and I think he will be a lovely horse.'
Conners was confident Best Choice had the ability to string together more minor wins this campaign and expects him to be well up to stakes company. While Jade Tiara, the colt's dam, will always be associated first and foremost with Silent Witness, she has not been a one-hit wonder.
She also produced the smart Hong Kong performer Very Fit and is represented presently by Best Choice's older Group-performed sister, Sister Madly. All her foals to race have been winners.
The Jockey Club yesterday announced exciting young French jockey, Maxime Guyon (pictured), will be licensed from December 8 until February 20.
