Centre stretches training options

Sangeeta Ahuja founded Life Management Yoga Centre (www.yoga.org.hk), Hong Kong's only not-for-profit yoga facility, 12 years ago, and part of its mission is to train others to become professional yoga instructors.

To that end, the centre is offering two new yoga-teacher training courses starting on Monday. The comprehensive 188-hour course covers the eight steps of classical yoga and includes the option to take an eight-day trip to the Yoga Institute in Mumbai. The basic 88-hour course covers the first four steps. Both courses will be in English.

Upon completion of either course, students receive a yoga-teaching certificate endorsed by the International Board of Yoga, Mumbai.

'Over the eight days, at the Yoga Institute, you will learn the right way to live to prevent disease at the physical, emotional, mental, and social levels, so you [become] a better human being,' Ahuja says.

The comprehensive and basic courses are HK$18,800 and HK$8,800 respectively. Participants may pay in instalments.

Upon completion of the comprehensive course, participants may receive a refund by teaching at the centre for a certain period.

The Life Management Yoga Centre was inaugurated in 1998 by the dean of the Yoga Institute in Mumbai. The centre's association with the Yoga Institute has remained strong over the years, with teachers from the institute visiting Hong Kong almost every year to conduct courses for local yoga teachers and students.

'It is beautiful there. Everything is taken care of. You become like a child again. You learn how to relax,' Ahuja says of the institute in Mumbai.

The Life Management Yoga Centre's name comes from Ahuja's desire to share the value of looking after oneself in an environment in which material values predominate. Regardless of whether you are wealthy, true success comes from within, she says.

'Classical yoga teaches us to give equal importance to our health and peace of mind, as we do to material values,' she says.

Today is the 12th anniversary of the centre's founding and, to celebrate, an open house will be held today from 11am to 6pm. Guests will be invited to try basic postures, breathing and meditation techniques in a yoga class, have fun playing yogic games and practising laughing yoga.

At the end of the day, Ahuja says they can expect to leave refreshed and at peace with the world by experiencing deep relaxation and physical awareness techniques.
