Casual workers miss out on benefits

Martin Wong

A quarter of workers interviewed by the Neighbourhood and Worker's Service Centre are hired as casual workers - which means they don't get statutory holidays and sick leave. The union says some employers deliberately hire workers on this basis to keep expenses down. A quarter of 444 workers, aged between 15 and 65, worked for an employer for less than 18 hours a week and less than four weeks continuously. Under Hong Kong labour laws, these workers are not entitled to statutory holidays and sickness allowances.
