Former Shanghai Tang designer uses Spanish influences for his label
Prospects look good for Joseph Li, Shanghai Tang's former chief designer of womenswear. Fashionistas turned out en masse, despite the rain, to support the launch of Li's own label, LIJOSEPH, at Central's Joyce boutique on Tuesday.
'I decided it was time to focus on my own designs,' Li said, explaining why he left Shanghai Tang in April after working with the local fashion-lifestyle brand for three years. 'But it's always good to work with restraints.'
Instead of the traditional Chinese influences seen in his former creations, Li has woven exotic Spanish elements into his new collection, which is exclusive to Joyce.
'I take inspiration from matadors and flamenco dancers,' Li said. 'The collection is more emotional, so I stuck with minimal colour.'
For the autumn-winter season, Li wants to dress girls up like boys. 'We love the androgynous look and a masculine take on the shirt-dress. I will nominate a shearling coat for this season's must-have items. It's very versatile.'
How about tips for dressing in the rainy season? 'Embrace the rain,' Li said with a laugh.
