Balenciaga spreads wings with new Harbour City store
What Hong Kong needs is more designer boutiques. So good news for those who don't want to schlep out to The Landmark Mall in Central for their motorcycle handbags: Balenciaga opened a new store in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, carrying a full selection of women's ready-to-wear and accessories.
Isabelle Guichot, president and CEO of Balenciaga, flew in from Paris to preside over the ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mimi Tang, president of Gucci Group Asia Pacific, and Doreen Lee, manager of Harbour City. The boutique is significant, as it is Balenciaga's first directly operated store in Hong Kong, setting the brand up for further retail expansion in Asia.
The store design echoes the geometric aesthetic of its flagship boutique in Paris, but also includes the 'asteroid wall', a unique feature of asteroids cut from polished aluminium. Guests mingled over champagne, orbiting the central marble displays of iconic Balenciaga handbags.
Celebrities at the opening reception included Vivian Chow Wai-man, Florinda Ho Chiu-wan and Wyman Wong Wai-man.
However, it isn't just the Hong Kong celebs that Balenciaga hopes to attract. 'Celebrities and fashionistas - we really dress them all over the world and that's great.' Guichot said. 'But we love the [Asian] businesswomen who are strong and confident in their look.'
