Mother of all concerns

DON'T forget your other mother on Mother's Day - she also needs your love, respect, care and attention.

Mother Earth gives us all that we need in life - food, water, air, fuel, and natural materials, like wood, stone and metals.

How do we repay her? By generally making a mess of our home.

Perhaps because we live in a big city like Hong Kong with all its modern conveniences we forget from where our sustenance comes.

Our food comes from fields and orchards, not markets and supermarkets; clean water comes from rivers, and streams not reservoirs and taps; fresh air comes from trees and plants not air-conditioners; and all our manufactured goods originally come from nature, not factories and shops.

Finally, all the waste that we create without consumption is taken out of sight and out of mind - down the drain, in the rubbish truck, or directly into the air around us.

On Mother's Day try to show your love and respect to both of your mothers. If you want to give a gift then make it an environmentally friendly one - a potted plant rather than cut flowers.

Avoid overpackaged so-called luxury gift boxes of cakes, sweets, biscuits and chocolates. Ask your parents if you can enjoy the day in a country park, (taking your own food and drink in re-usable containers and, preferably, travelling by public transport).

If you are going to eat out suggest to your parents that they avoid fast food restaurants.

Friends of the Earth is a local non-profit environmental organisation. For more information call 528-5588.
