Travellers' checks

On the right track

With Cathay Pacific's launch of scheduled flights from Hong Kong to Moscow, a luxury rail service from the Russian capital to Nice on the French Riviera, inaugurated last month, may be of interest to local travellers. The train, run by Russian Railways (www.eng.rzd.ru), follows a route that operated before the Russian Revolution, by which time Nice was so popular with holidaying Muscovites that it was (and still is) home to the largest Russian Orthodox church outside Russia. The journey takes 53 hours and passes through Minsk, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Italy. Fares range from Euro306 (HK$3,250) to Euro1,200, for a luxury compartment with an en-suite shower. The train has two dining cars, three deluxe carriages, six first-class carriages and one second-class carriage. Russian Railways claims carriage attendants have undergone training in 'French and English language proficiency, psychology, ethics and passenger service culture'. The company also advises that passengers not in possession of a Belarus transit visa will be booted off the train at the border, so plan ahead accordingly.

Time travel

Before advertising agency 'creativity' reduced travel-industry promotion to a bland combination of empty slogans and formulaic photography, the travel poster was a thing of simple beauty. Just the name of a destination and a cruise line or airline, combined with an eye-catching image, was evocation enough in the early days of mass-tourism. Today such inspirational works of art are highly sought-after collectibles. An exhibition titled 'The Golden Age of Travel', featuring a collection of travel posters dating from 1900 to 1970, is being held at the Picture This Gallery (13/F, Office Tower, 9 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2525 2820, www.picturethiscollection.com). The exhibition will be open from 11am to 6pm Monday to Saturday until October 23.

Late arrival

Originally slated to open in time for the World Expo in Shanghai but instead opening on November 1, the day after the event winds up, Hotel Indigo is the first Asia-Pacific entry for the InterContinental Hotels Group's new upmarket boutique brand. It's located at Shiliu Pu (Pier 16) on the Bund and claims to be Shanghai's only riverfront hotel. Special opening rates with a few freebies thrown in can be found at www. hotelindigo.com.

Deal of the week

A two-night package to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on offer at Swire Travel, has a range of hotels available, starting at the lower price range with accommodation at the modest Elios Hotel. Stay here and you'll pay HK$2,490, which includes breakfast and round-trip, economy-class flights on Cathay Pacific. While this hotel gets mostly favourable reviews at online hotel-rating websites, the Park Hyatt Saigon (above), with a package price of HK$4,990, is a better deal for those who can afford it. Both these prices, quoted per person for two people travelling and staying together, will be available until the end of the year. For details, visit www.swiretravel.com and select Leisure Travel/Vacation Package/Vietnam.
