Yat Lok Barbecue Restaurant

Fare Typical cha chaan teng dishes and Chinese-style barbecued meats; it's famous for its roast goose (below).

Ambience Diners are obliged to pass the cramped and steamy kitchen to reach the closely packed tables of this bustling, friendly local favourite.

Cost About HK$100 per person for dinner.

Wwho to bring Relatives, friends, but it's not a date venue.

Turn-ons Our half roast goose came piled high on an oval plate and we drank in its aroma. The meat had thoroughly absorbed the marinade and was tender and soft. The skin was deliciously chewy, and juices oozed out with every bite. Order that and a bowl of plain white rice and you are set for a meal. The menu also boasts a long list of other meat and vegetarian dishes. The black peppered beef short ribs were superbly done, and came accompanied by a mound of sliced onions cooked until they were soft and flavourful. The portions were generous, and the service was excellent.

Turn-offs Almost all the dishes are very oily. A quarter of the goose was just fat. The location is inconvenient unless you live in Tai Po and know your way around.

Drinks Yat Lok has a series of lotus seed drinks, including an iced chocolate one. The lotus seeds were sweet and crunchy and the drinks are ideal for those with a sweet tooth. Other drinks include normal cha chaan teng drinks such as lemon and milk teas.
