Be an investor in the future
MOST environmentalists have probably heard of the project Programme for Belize, which has three small offices - in Belize, the US and the UK. Here in Hong Kong, we are helping to raise funds for the purchase of acres of land to protect the rainforest in Belize. The response from individuals and schools has been tremendous over the years.
Now there is a new project that the World Wide Land Conservation Trust (WWLCT), which runs Programme for Belize launched very recently. It is called Philippines Reef and Rainforest. The owners of Danjugan Island are seeking to sell, and developers are waiting in the wings to move in and begin clearance. WWLCT must raise GBP250,000 to purchase and start to protect Danjugan Island. Danjugan lies in the Sulu Sea, three kilometres west of Negroes Island, in the Visayan Island Group, and is surrounded by coral reef.
The trustees of the WWLCT's Philippine project, who include David Bellamy, invite everyone to purchase a ''share'' of this Limited Edition Island. The first steps have been taken and an offer for Danjugan has been accepted, and in WWLCT's words, ''we now need people who see themselves as investors in the future - supporters who are not afraid to take positive action and do something specific and direct in a place where the results will last''.
A ''share'' can be purchased for HK$500 through Friends of the Earth Hong Kong and you will receive a shareholder certificate, either a standard or a gift certificate. I am calling on environmentalists and the public who are interested in preserving the rainforest and coral reef in the world.
