The government will hire 3,000 fewer temporary staff to carry out next year's 10-year census than were used to conduct the 2001 census, Commissioner for Census and Statistics Fung Hing-wang says. By reducing the number of temporary field workers to 20,600, the department can save about HK$30 million. It will collect data using electronic forms and mailed questionnaires instead of just face-to-face interviews. Fung said recruitment would start by the end of the year.
