Date set for showdown over Social Democrats' leadership
Internal strife in the League of Social Democrats could come to a temporary end in two weeks, possibly with the overthrow of the party's leadership.
The conflict between two league factions - one led by rising star Edward Yum Liang-hsien and the other by chairman Andrew To Kwan-hang - started over whether the league should still take part in the carve-up of electoral constituencies with the pan-democrats.
The crack widened when Yum and some members opposed the party's decision to set up the Island and Kowloon East branches, saying the members had not voted on the issue so it infringed party statutes.
An emergency general meeting on November 7 will either end with To overthrown or Yum lowering his profile, because members will vote on whether the party's leaders should resign en masse followed by a new election.
The member's conference was triggered by the two factions each collecting more than 40 signatures, in accordance with party rules.
Yum, who gave up his post as an executive committee member last Friday, led one of the campaigns, with 42 signatures, in a bid to 'clarify the party's direction'.
