Nobel Prize winner is a true patriot
I am very happy that imprisoned human rights activist Liu Xiaobo received this year's Nobel Peace Prize. The committee cited his 'long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China.'
Liu has been fighting for human rights on the mainland for a long time. His award was built on sweat and tears.
Liu was charged with 'inciting subversion of state power' and sentenced to 11 years in prison. I cannot understand why someone fighting for democracy and progress is in prison. I think Liu is a patriot. Just because he criticised the Communist Party does not mean he has betrayed his country. He spoke out to improve the political situation on the mainland.
But the central government was angry at the Norwegian government that the prize went to Liu.
China is an emerging world power, but human rights conditions are far from ideal. I hope Liu will soon be released and China will improve its human rights record.

Thank you for your letter, Wing. It is extremely sad that Liu will not be able to collect his prize. The fact that he is in prison is shameful for China, and it seems he will not be released any time soon.
It is ironic that Premier Wen Jiabao has gone around the world saying the country is moving towards a freer society when in fact someone like Liu remains locked up. Liu is not well known on the mainland, however. It is possible that soon he will fade from view and memory unless something is done to keep him visible.
Liu is part of our legacy. It is up to us to make sure his story does not fade away from public awareness.
