Ex-policeman is accused of killing woman found in sea

A former policeman arrested on Monday on suspicion of killing a 25-year-old woman, whose half-naked body was found floating in the sea off Ap Lei Chau a week ago, will appear in Eastern Court today charged with one count of murder.

The 43-year-old man, who became a taxi driver after he left the force, was hooded and chained yesterday when he was escorted by about 30 officers to Sai Kung and Ap Lei Chau in a reconstruction of the crime.

At about 10.15am, he was driven to a hillside off Lung Ha Wan Road, Sai Kung, where the victim - Yu Wai-yuk - was believed to have been strangled in a dispute on October 26.

Officers combed nearby bushes and seized a pair of shoes and clothes yesterday. Police believe the shoes and clothes belonged to Yu.

They left an hour later and went to the Lee Nam Road waterfront in Ap Lei Chau, from where Yu is believed to have been thrown into the sea on October 26.

The re-enactment of the alleged crime lasted for about two hours and was videotaped by officers from the Identification Bureau.

Police divers were also called to the waterfront and went into the sea to search for her belongings.

Yu's body was found floating in the sea off Ap Lei Chau at about 8am on Wednesday last week

An initial postmortem examination showed she had drowned, but further investigations showed there were suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, according to police.

Officers from the Marine Police regional crime unit worked around the clock interviewing the woman's friends and relatives before arresting the taxi driver on Monday afternoon.

Police also impounded his taxi, which is believed to have been used to transport the victim from Sai Kung to Ap Lei Chau on October 26.

A police officer said evidence that had been collected from the taxi was taken to a government laboratory to be examined.

The officer said the driver had left the police more than 10 years ago.

Another police officer said the man, who is unmarried, and the woman had known each other for more than a year.

The killing was the second murder case last month. On October 11, an 88-year-old woman was murdered at her home in Kwai Chung. Her mahjong partner, a woman visitor from the mainland, was arrested on October 14.

Police figures show there were 27 reported homicides in the first eight months of this year, down from 37 in the same period last year.
