The Federation of Hong Kong, Kowloon, New Territories Hawker Associations urged a Legco panel to keep the voluntary surrender scheme for itinerant hawker licences alive. The panel is being asked to let the scheme expire because hawker numbers have been falling and those remaining have had enough time to consider other work, Food and Environmental Hygiene officials say. But the federation said the survival of hundreds of old hawkers was threatened.
