Seventeen years ago, Christoph Wellendorff (pictured) and his wife came to Hong Kong for their honeymoon. The German goldsmith, who had just joined his family business, Wellendorff Gold Creation, fell in love with the city.

'I knew then that one day I'd open a Wellendorff shop here in Hong Kong,' he said.

That day is here, as Wellendorff opens a boutique in the IFC Mall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony tonight.

The 46-year-old fourth-generation goldsmith said he liked Hong Kong because of its unique mix of Western and Eastern culture. 'In most cities, you either get the West or the East,' he said. 'With Hong Kong, you get both.'

The Wellendorff brand, perhaps best known for its layered gold rings, will unveil special-edition Hong Kong rings made of 18-carat gold with eight lotus blossoms engraved in enamel.
