Burke's debut will overcome

Alexandra Burke's debut album, Overcome, topped the British charts and sold 130,000 copies in the first week alone. The highly touted deluxe version includes music videos featuring Laza Morgan, Flo Rida and Pitbull.

The opening track, Bad Boys, epitomises Burke's magic, with many people labelling it '21st-century techno-future pop'. The lyrics are intriguing and rebellious: 'I know I'm playing with fire but I don't mind.' Add a catchy chorus and you have a hit song, and one that reveals Burke's inner rebel.

Hallelujah, also released as a single, is a remake of Leonard Cohen's original. Burke leaves no doubt as to why she won The X Factor's fifth season with this laid-back rendition and its underlying profundity. Chill out, shut your eyes and turn up the volume.

There's a song for everyone in this album - from downbeat offerings to contagious, Depeche Mode-like vibes, the array of tracks gives you music for the gym, car or beach.

Overcome takes music to a place where danger and love cross paths. Music fans: beware, but check it out! Burke may be having beginners' luck with this album, so we'll have to wait and see if she can maintain her appeal.
