Traces of melamine found in batch of yogurt

The safety of mainland dairy products is again in question as more melamine-laced products have emerged.

The Commerce Bureau of Xiangfan, Hubei has found traces of melamine in samples of 50 bottles of corn-flavoured yogurt, according to a report by China National Radio.

The batch of yogurt contained 4.8mg of melamine in every kilogram - far exceeding the limit set by the state food safety watchdog. Authorities attempted to track down the batch, produced by Hubei Yuanshan Dairy, but apparently it had already been sold in Xiangfan, the report said. They could not find the person who bought it.

The report did not specify how the toxic chemical - which killed at least six children and made about 300,000 children ill in 2008 - got into the yogurt. Nor did it specify the possible scale of contamination.

It is unknown whether anyone from the dairy has been held responsible for the incident.
