Married teenagers have the highest birth rate of any female age groups, new government statistics show.

For every 1,000 married women aged 15 to 19 in 2006 - the latest figures available - 668 became mothers. This was an increase from 342 in 1986 and 521 in 2001.

The latest birth rate among married teens was the highest across all age groups. Among every 1,000 married women aged 25 to 29 in 2006, only 161 had children - down from 222 in 1981 and 181 in 1991. The corresponding figures for women aged 30 to 24 were 111 in 1981, 104 in 1991 and 115 in 2006. The findings were published in the government's monthly digest of statistics.
