Everything old is new again as fans flock to join jeweller's inspired trip down memory lane

Retro is in. It was certainly a big enough incentive for the city's fashionistas to justify splurges on vintage, or even vintage lookalike, jewellery - not that they are ever short of an excuse.

On Friday, Lane Crawford's IFC store was heaving with well-heeled ladies for the launch of Biyan Wanaatmadja's jewellery collection themed 'As Time Goes By'.

The nostalgic collection boasts chunky necklaces, earrings and embroidered scarves studded with vintage pearls, glass beads and coloured stones.

'As time goes by, the legacy of tradition and craftsmanship is passed on,' the Jakarta-based designer (pictured above) said. 'I'm always inspired by my cultural heritage and I intend to bring the beauty back with a modern twist.'

He has played around with the ethnic Indonesian jewellery style and revived it with fabrics and crystals for a feminine and contemporary touch.

Guests seemed to be channelling their inner Marie Antoinette in the accessories department.

More than a few of the designer's appreciative fans held a couple of necklaces in one hand while handling a champagne glass in the other.

Maybe it's time for granny's Victorian jewellery to see the light of day again.
