HK travellers warned to steer clear of island

Hong Kong people have been advised not to travel to Yeonpyeong Island in Korea.

The Security Bureau said last night the island was not a tourist spot and no local tour group was visiting it.

'However, in view of the incident, residents are advised not to travel there,' a bureau spokesman said.

Despite the events on the Korean Peninsula, tour agencies including Hong Thai Travel, Wing On Travel and EGL Tours said all trips to the country remained normal and no customers had cancelled bookings.

Daniel Chan Kin-pang, deputy general manager of Hong Thai, said the conflict area, Yeonpyeong Island, was 70 kilometres away from Incheon International Airport, so the agency's itinerary was not affected.

Joseph Tung Yao-chung, chairman of the Travel Industry Council, said that the 1,800 Hongkongers in South Korea were all safe.

The Korean consulate said it had no comment.
