Sorel

Who started it? Established in 1959 by Ontario-based Kaufman Footwear, Canadian bootmaker Sorel became part of Columbia Sportswear in 2000.

In its heyday, Sorel's lace-up boots were considered the warmest and most comfortable of winter footwear. Last year, however, the brand moved away from sportswear and towards fashionable and functional footwear. Sorel has been worn by celebrities such as Kate Hudson, Brad Pitt, Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss

Why we love it: Sorel boots keep your feet as warm as sheepskin Uggs but they have more detailing, shape and colour. Designed to resemble durable hiking boots, they come in a variety of materials, including shearling, suede, faux fur and vulcanised rubber. The winter collection features a wide range of colour combinations, from classic black and grey to eye-catching pink and black houndstooth.

What we'd pick: the Joan of Arctic full-grain and suede leather boots, with a faux-fur cuff (right; HK$1,799), which will keep your toes cosy in sub-zero temperatures, and the Tivoli houndstooth short boots with fleece lining (above; HK$1,199).

Where can you get it? Selected styles are available at Lane Crawford, IFC Mall, Central, tel: 2118 3388.
