Designers put on show

Local designers are gearing up to promote their industry to Hong Kong audiences following their success during World Expo in Shanghai.

For those who missed their exhibit - 'Hong Kong: Creative Ecologies' - in Shanghai, the event will be staged in Hong Kong in February at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin.

The event's organiser, the Hong Kong Design Centre, hopes the exhibition will help local designers, especially newcomers to the field, to expand their networks and build contacts with companies.

'The Hong Kong market is small and designers need to go out to search for opportunities,' designer Kai-yin Lo said.

She urged local enterprises to invest more in local designers, saying: 'A good design can add value to products and thus it can sharpen enterprises' competitiveness.'

She said Hong Kong designers faced keen competition from their mainland counterparts but believed the city still had an edge. 'Design is a way of expression, and without a truly free environment, it cannot perform its function properly,' she said.

The Hong Kong exhibition, to run from February 5 to May 11, will feature the work of about 100 established and up-and-coming local designers, and there will be educational seminars each month.
