And then there were five ... this could be the countdown to unveiling Asia's 'Spice Girls'

Depending on who you ask, the Spice Girls phenomenon of the 1990s was either the best or worst thing ever. Well, Hong Kong can make the proud (or shameful) claim that 'the next Spice Girls' may have formed on Monday night at Hitec in Kowloon Bay.

A slew of musicians, from Karen Mok Man-wai, Lea Salonga and Coco Lee to Hanjin Tan were on hand as guest performer and judges for Project Lotus, a six-month-long project aimed at finding the next Asian girl group.

Organised by media company FarWest Entertainment, the project is backed by a group of industry insiders, most notably Eliot Kennedy, the producer of that aforementioned English girl group.

The 10 finalists, hailing from across Asia, did their best to impress the judges. Making the final five (from left, above) were hometown girl Victoria Chan, Angeli Flores from the Philippines, Ji-hae Lee from South Korea, Japan's Natsuko Danjo and Alisha Budhrani from India.

But if this is to be the beginning of pop culture domination for these girls, they've got a long way to go. The poor sound system and general lack of cohesiveness gave the show a low-grade feel. But hey, Victoria Adams (now Beckham) didn't become Posh Spice overnight.

The girls will stay in Hong Kong for promotions until December 10, then head to Los Angeles to start working on, well, being superstar divas.
