Animal magic

Jin Peh

The rooster, the 10th animal of the Chinese zodiac, represents the peak of autumn and thus the metal element. For those who would benefit from this element, it would be advantageous to keep domestic birds, such as parakeets, as pets, as actual roosters, hens, ducks and swans would be impractical in an urban environment.

The 11th animal of the zodiac is man's best friend, the dog. The animal represents the last month of autumn and thus symbolises the earth, metal and fire elements. Those who enjoy the company of dogs probably have one or more of these elements as favourable in their astrological chart.

Finally, the 12th animal of the zodiac, the pig, or boar, represents the first month of winter and the water and wood elements. While some Hollywood celebrities have been known to keep them as pets, us mere mortals may consider keeping some of the other animals that represent the wood and water elements, such as a hamster or a rabbit.

One's lifestyle should be taken into account when taking on the responsibility of a pet. Even if a fung shui master recommends a specific animal as a pet, don't feel compelled to get one unless you are ready to invest the time and energy to give the animal a caring environment.
