Three charged over gold robbery

Three men allegedly involved in the city's largest gold robbery in a decade were jointly charged with a count of theft yesterday. They were to appear in Tuen Mun court today. The three men were arrested by police in Foshan about two weeks ago. Hong Kong police said they had stolen 265 gold bars each weighing 1kg and worth HK$90 million from a company in Yuen Long on October 22. Most of the gold was recovered.

Crewman dies in fall on ship

A mainland crewman was killed on board a cargo vessel in the Yau Ma Tei typhoon shelter yesterday when he fell 20 feet to the deck after being hit by a container.

Inmate passes packet of pills

The Correctional Services Department recovered 26 pills wrapped in plastic that were swallowed by a 47-year-old detainee at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre.

Police crackdown on road racing

Sixteen people were arrested for racing or dangerous driving during a police operation in Yuen Long over the weekend. Another six motorists were arrested for racing on Tuen Mun Road to Kong Sham Western Highway, where they were stopped after a chase.

Chow in Beijing for beef talks

Secretary for Food and Health Dr York Chow Yat-ngok left for Beijing yesterday to meet senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine for discussions on the importation of chilled beef. He was joined by Permanent Secretary for Food and Health (Food) Marion Lai Chan Chi-kuen, Food and Environmental Hygiene Director Clement Leung Cheuk-man and Centre for Food Safety Controller Dr Constance Chan Hon-yee.
