I am writing in response to the article 'Study finds stereotyping in women's role in the home' (South China Morning Post, November 24). In the past, women were usually responsible for housework while men worked to earn money. But today, with more women working, I think household chores should be equally shared by couples.
It is unfair for women to contribute to household income and do all the work at home, too. There will be fewer disputes if husbands volunteer to do more housework.
According to the chairwoman of the Women's Commission, men are still more respected than women in society. In Hong Kong, women are usually willing to do a lot for their 'dream homes'. That's why they do all the housework. This is a matter of tradition, not respect.
I do believe emphasising gender equality can persuade men to change their mentality about household chores.
