The Beer Garden

Happy Valley Racecourse, 2 Sports Road, Happy Valley. Tel: 2966 8111

The vibe: there was a time when it was a tough ask to get a non-racing person to join you midweek at Happy Valley. Now, it seems, everyone wants in on the act. Who would have though just a few patches of synthetic grass and a couple of kegs would make such a difference? As far as atmosphere goes, the Beer Garden is in a world of its own. Under the lights, smack bang in the heart of the city and with the horses pounding past. And you might even have a win.

The drinks: beer. At least eight varieties are offered at every race meeting - even more if there's a promotion on such as the racecourse's Oktoberfest. And they start at HK$32 a pint - close to the cheapest you'll find anywhere on the island. But the clever opt for a jug (HK$115) and share it among friends. If you really must, there's also red and white wine by the glass - but come on, what's the place called again?

The verdict: there's nothing quite like the Beer Garden in town - or anywhere else for that matter. Backpackers mixing with bankers, cab drivers offering tips to whoever might bend them an ear and everyone united by the same cause.
