School out to write itself into record books with mass calligraphy class
To help educate its students about the meaning of life, Fukien Secondary School and its affiliate decided to take a different route. It organised the biggest traditional Chinese calligraphy class in the world in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record.
There were no classes at the school in Yau Tong yesterday morning. Instead, more than 600 students and their parents turned up with their brush pens.
Led by 15 instructors, they had to write 24 Chinese words to learn about righteousness and traditional Chinese thinking.
The event was photographed, taped and observed by three adjudicators, whose reports will help mark the event as a world record. The calligraphy produced in the class will be scanned and shown to Guinness World Records - and the event could be included in the annual almanac, a spokesman for the event said.
Organiser Ho Yung-ah, one of the instructors, said the aim was to remind students of the importance of leading a positive life and to prepare them as the city's population ages.
'Cross-generational efforts like this can enhance society's assets and instil a sense of trust and belonging to everyone,' he said.
