Abductors told to give themselves up

If you are a human trafficker, turn yourself in within three months and you may escape punishment.

That is a joint directive the central security and judicial authorities are to issue today, demanding traffickers of women and children give themselves up at police stations, Xinhua reports.

The Ministry of Public Security will join the Supreme People's Court, Supreme People's Procuratorate and Ministry of Justice in issuing the order. Traffickers who help their victims return home or surrender to police can be exempt from punishment, while those who ignore the directive will face severe penalties. The directive will also encourage relatives and friends of human traffickers to blow the whistle, so as to help more abductees return to their families.

Internet users poked fun at the notice yesterday, saying there was no way traffickers would turn themselves in just because of an official announcement. Some suggested the mainland judiciary issue an order for all corrupt officials to surrender.
