Blinkers do the trick for honest galloper

The David Hall-trained Soldier has hardly assembled a big winning record, but his honesty when he gets into Class Four hasn't been under question and he landed a narrow but well deserved win. Soldier (Howard Cheng Yue-tin) had won two of eight in Australia and was none from 21 here but with four second placings, some of those close. With blinkers going on for the first time here, Soldier managed to arrive in time to win, but Hall was still not sure it was the shades. 'He won with them and without them in Australia and my gut feeling is he would have won today without them, too,' he said. 'But I thought it was time to try them. His record probably shows this 1,400m trip is his best - he's run three seconds from five attempts at it before today - but I'm sure he will get a mile when the race falls right for him and I intend to keep trying him at that distance, too.'
