Asian flavour for Lunar New Year Cup
Next month's Lunar New Year Cup will take on an Asian flavour again after it was confirmed three invited teams would all be from the continent.
Local powerhouses South China will host Tianjin Teda and Guangzhou GAC from the Chinese Super League and South Korea's' Ulsan Hyundai in the four-team tournament to be held at Hong Kong Stadium on February 3 and 6.
Tianjin finished second in the Chinese Super League last season, while Ulsan played here in the same tournament in 2008, finishing bottom.
The Lunar New Year Cup has been renamed the Asian Super Club Challenge Cup and fans can look forward to watching new South China signing, former England international Nicky Butt, in action again. The ex-Manchester United midfielder will arrive later this month on a three-month contract. He has made one appearance for the Caroliners here in November, scoring in a 2-1 league win over TSW Pegasus.
South China have also signed two Brazilians - Joel Bertoti Padilha and Giovane da Silva - who both joined the Caroliners from Guangdong Sunray Cave. Guangzhou boast former Celtic player Zheng Zhi, China captain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and Sun Xiang, who played for PSV Eindhoven in 2007.
