Mr Banana ready to lead the field again as fun run takes to Tsim Sha Tsui promenade

Beat it but don't slip on it. The annual Beat the Banana charity run will take place at Tsim Sha Tsui's eastern promenade on January 23 to raise funds for the World Cancer Research Fund Hong Kong.

For the 3-kilometre fun run, one life-sized Banana Man gets to take off five seconds ahead of the other contestants, but also becomes the target for all to chase.

This year's Mr Banana will be schoolteacher Brendan Kean (pictured), who won last year's fun run in nine minutes and 18 seconds. It seems this year he'll have to go even faster.

'We welcome everyone to join the fun run. Even tourists or families with baby trolleys can come and join us,' said Jodi Cheng Chung-yeen, event organiser. 'The point is to promote a healthy lifestyle and also raise funds for latest cancer prevention research.'

For the more serious runners, there will also be a 6km elite race before the fun run.

The male and female champions will each win air tickets and accommodation in London to represent Hong Kong in May's UK Beat the Banana race in Hyde Park.

Registration is open until January 14. Sign up for the race at www.wcrf-hk.org or call 25295025
