Columbarium developer files lawsuit over land seizure
A columbarium developer took the Lands Department to court over the seizure of a site for alleged land-lease breaches. In a writ filed in the High Court on Tuesday, Lippo Star International, registered in the British Virgin Islands, asked the court to return the plot of land on Lantau Plateau, Lantau Island. Lippo Star bought the 300,000 sq ft plot at Tei Tong Tsai for HK$8 million in January last year. In a warning notice issued to the developer, the government said the land lease only allowed fruit trees to be grown and a columbarium was prohibited. The government registered the seizure in the Land Registry on August 9, which was published in the Government Gazette on August 20. A department spokeswoman declined to comment. Lawyers for Lippo Star could not be reached for comment.
