SCMP announces two senior appointments

SCMP Group, owner of the South China Morning Post, announced two executive appointments yesterday.

Elsie Cheung, a 10-year veteran of the company, was promoted to the newly created role of chief operating officer.

In addition to retaining the responsibilities of her current role as director of advertising and marketing services, Cheung will also oversee day-to-day commercial operations including circulation and distribution, production, strategic marketing, digital development, recruitment services, SCMP magazines and all functional departments within the organisation.

Cheung will report to group managing director and chief executive Kuok Hui Kwong. Editor-in-chief Reginald Chua will continue to report directly to Kuok.

SCMP Group also announced yesterday the promotion of Etienne Maccario to the role of director of digital business development.

Maccario joined the Post in May of last year from Haymarket Media and has played a pivotal role in the launch of the newspaper's iPad edition, the relaunch of cosmopolitan.com.hk, and in the introduction of news-gathering tools for scmp.com, such as crowd-sourced content.

'The management changes reflect both personal growth as well as robust organisational growth,' Kuok was quoted as saying in an announcement.

'As our company makes a strong recovery from a tough 2009, we are well positioned with an excellent team in place to continue building our business and brand for the future.'

SCMP Group swung to a profit of HK$57.8 million in the first half of last year on improved advertising revenue and cost savings, speeding up a recovery from its second-worst loss in a decade during the year before.

First-half revenue rose 22 per cent to HK$411.7 million, which the company attributed to an increased number of initial public offerings on the Hong Kong stock exchange, generating higher sales for the Post.
