Brothers know where they belong with poetic music

The method of Chinese-American scholar Amy Chua might produce ambitious high achievers, but does it turn out really cool kids like the two brothers who make up Minor Soul, an up-and-coming electric folk music group from Hong Kong?

Jack (left) and Max Wagner are 16 and 18, both went to the French International School and have lived in the city all their lives. To give something back, the duo wrote the poetic single Where We Belong, which is dedicated to the city. It's lovely and they are making a video of it.

'We grew up in a high-rise overlooking Hong Kong's storied waterfront, raiding our father's collection of rock classics - everything from the Velvet Underground and Bowie to Jeff Buckley,' said Max.

'We have been experimenting, performing and writing together for years. Dylan, The Beatles and Green Day have all influenced us in some way.

'All the lyrics and melody spring from the urban skyscape in Hong Kong, and also kung fu movies and Hollywood, US radio charts and the BBC.'

Jack in his summers studied at the Berklee College of Music in the US and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. He plays guitar, drums, keys and sings with a plaintive, folky baritone.

Max, who travelled Asia as a child actor in stage productions and studied voice at Guildhall in London, is largely self-taught on guitar, bass and piano. He sings with a lilting, soul-baring tenor.
