Caroliners try to revive 'golden era'

South China hope additional investment of more than HK$10 million will bring back the golden days of Hong Kong soccer.

The Caroliners made several key signings when the transfer window reopened this month, including former England international Nicky Butt and former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid star Mateja Kezman.

Both signed until the end of the season and are believed to have cost more than HK$10 million.

The Caroliners also lured Hong Kong international Ng Wai-chiu back from the Chinese Super League and two Brazilians from China First Division club Guangdong.

Convenor Steven Lo Kit-sing, who attended the first training session for Kezman and Ng at Happy Valley training ground yesterday, said: 'The effect may not be seen instantly but I hope more investment will come next season or the one following with South China having taken this bold step.

'It has happened in other places before, like the J-League in Japan. When they first started, they brought in a number of world-class players who may have passed their peak but are still attractive to the fans because of their names and fame.

'We are taking the initiative but we cannot do it without the support of fellow clubs.'

Lo disclosed South China's budget was now close to HK$40 million, with Butt and Kezman believed to be earning about HK$375,000 per week.

Kezman, who arrived on Sunday, received a warm welcome from his new teammates yesterday and is confident he can help Hong Kong soccer move forward.

'I have played in many leagues - in Spain, Italy and England - and I think I have a lot to offer the team,' said Kezman, who last played for French side Paris Saint-Germain.

'I've been to Hong Kong before and it's a beautiful city. I want a new challenge and I want to try it out.'

The 31-year-old striker will be a key player for South China when they start their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup campaign in March.

The Caroliners hope a win in the regional tournament will take them into the top tier - the Asian Champions League - next season.

Kezman and Butt, who arrives tomorrow, will appear on Saturday at Hong Kong Stadium when South China host Tai Po in the First Division.

Lo said: 'I hope more fans will come to show their support for the two star players, more than when Butt played for us for the first time against TSW Pegasus in November.'

More than 8,000 people attended the match when Butt scored in his first match in Hong Kong.
